Cicada

29Jun10

After spending most of its 17 year life span underground, the cicada burrows free from beneath the soil, makes its way to the nearest plant and, clinging to its surface, sheds its body. A new body emerges, while the old is left empty hanging from where it has been vacated. Many myths speak of the cicada as some being, usually poets or a woman with a beautiful singing voice, that has died without realising it or has left the world bereft without its song.

The cicada, once matured and having left behind the shell of its body, it will begin to sing, take flight, mate and die.
